Kayal sits where the mangrove closes in and the channel opens out — three rooms, a verandah, and a jetty two minutes from your pillow.

The Kayal Idea

Kayal means expanse of backwater — we built beside it, not over it.

Kayal Retreat is a family home turned into three guest rooms, built where the paddy fields give way to mangrove and the mangrove gives way to open backwater. The roof is tin and old timber; the walls are lime-washed and a little uneven. Nothing here was designed — it was lived in first.

Mornings start with kingfishers on the jetty posts. Evenings end on the verandah, sofa cushions gone soft from years of guests before you, watching country boats cross the channel as the light drops behind the palms.

This is a homestay built around one idea — that the best amenity is a channel that doesn't hurry.

A Day at Kayal

Slow mornings, quiet evenings.

Start with coffee by the jetty, drift out on the canoe when the tide turns, or just sit on the verandah and watch the channel go by. Nothing here is scheduled for you — the water is simply there when you're ready for it.

Every stay here begins the same way — through the blue door, past the vines, into the quiet.

The sunset run.

A country boat leaves the jetty most evenings, no engine, just a pole and the tide. You'll pass the mangrove island, a couple of fishing lines, and not much else. Ask at the desk to join — it's usually free for guests staying two nights or more.

Living Heritage

The spirit of the backwater.

This channel carries a lot more than boats. A little of what's still alive along its banks.

01

Snake Boat Races

Come August–September, long wooden vallams race down the channel to the beat of a hundred oars and a boatman's chant.

02

Coir & Cane Craft

Coconut husk and cane, worked by hand into rope, mats and the same lampshades that hang in the lounge.

03

Toddy & Backwater Cuisine

Fresh-tapped toddy, red rice, and fish curry cooked the way it's cooked in the kitchens along this channel.
